On Friday, November 1, in the serene “Sermon on the Mount” section of Springdale Cemetery, the Peoria County Coroner’s Office held a service in memory of 43 individuals whose remains had gone unclaimed. Around 30 community members gathered to pay their respects to lives that might have otherwise been forgotten.
The service reflected a commitment to dignity and compassion for all. Coroner Jamie Harwood welcomed attendees and shared a passage from Matthew 25:40, reminding everyone that, “Whatever you do unto the least of your brothers and sisters, you do unto me.”
P.C.C. Chaplain Pastor Chad Manbeck then delivered a message on the importance of compassion, underscoring the fundamental respect owed to all as God’s children. Each name of the 43 deceased was read aloud by Deputy Coroner Ben Brewer, giving voice and remembrance to those laid to rest. Pastor Manbeck concluded with a prayer, dismissing the gathering in peace.
The community’s support made the service a beautiful tribute. Wright & Salmon Mortuary provided a funeral coach and casket, while Peoria Wilbert supplied a burial vault. The District 8 Funeral Directors Association donated a floral spray and Springdale Cemetery graciously waived all fees for the grave opening and closing. A warm gathering afterward offered coffee and doughnuts provided by Gift of Hope.
While the memorial service marked an honorable conclusion for these individuals, a permanent memorial headstone is also being planned—ensuring a lasting tribute to these lives within Springdale Cemetery.
