Why Consider Springdale Cemetery?

Due to our size and varied topography, Springdale offers what no other cemetery in the Peoria area can: options to suit different preferences, tastes and budgets all within the confines of a rich, historic and natural setting that overlooks the scenic Illinois River Valley.

You may choose in-ground burial for full-body interment (inside a casket and outer burial container), above-ground placement (in a mausoleum crypt) or a resting place for cremated remains (at a scattering garden or inside an urn). More details about each option — plus the benefits of pre-arranging services — are below.

The Springdale Cemetery Management Authority sets the cemetery’s fees for interment rights and burial services competitively. Compare our costs with other local cemeteries, and you’ll find that our prices are often below the others. We’re currently offering a special promotion on pre-need sales of gravesites to all residents of Peoria County. Learn more by viewing our Pre-Arrangement & Financing information.

If you’re ready to discuss arrangements, have other questions or wish to compare pricing, please contact our office at (309) 681-1400.

Traditional Burials

When people think of a cemetery, they generally picture in-ground burials with marble or granite headstones. Springdale has 254 acres of beautiful hills and valleys, many of which have traditional in-ground graves, monuments and markers. There’s space for many, many more. For a personal tour of available locations for a traditional burial at Springdale, please call our office at (309) 681-1400.

Cremation & Scattering Gardens

More and more people are choosing cremation over a traditional burial. If you’ve made the decision to be cremated, have you considered how you want to be memorialized? Springdale offers multiple options.

In addition to burying cremated remains in a cemetery lot or placing them in a niche within our mausoleum, you may choose to place them in one of our two scattering gardens. Both are quiet, contemplative areas where families may scatter a loved one’s cremated remains with dignity and respect.

Prairie Gardens, our newest scattering area, is located near the old Perry Street entrance, south of the South Bluff area. Included in the scattering fee is a 3” x 2.5” memorial plaque with dates of birth, death and scattering. You may choose a larger plaque (some with photos) for an additional charge.

Gazebo Scattering Garden is located to the north of Gazebo Garden and at the base of the hill up to the Good Shepherd area. Included in the scattering fee is a memorial paver with the name of the deceased, date of birth and date of death.

We record all scatterings in cemetery records and with the state of Illinois. We can also provide chairs and a podium for a service if desired. Please contact our office at (309) 681-1400 to discuss your options. For more information about cremation, The Cremation Association of North America is a helpful resource.

Public & Private Mausoleums

Another alternative to traditional in-ground burial is interment in a mausoleum — a free-standing building that houses remains above ground. Springdale is home to a historic public mausoleum with space for above-ground burial and marble niches for cremated remains. It also houses an interior chapel that seats 30.

In addition, 16 private family mausoleums are scattered throughout the cemetery grounds. The first was built in 1859 by the Zotz family and the most recent in 2020 by the Johnson family. Interested in interment in the Springdale Mausoleum or learning more about establishing a family mausoleum or plot? Contact our office at (309) 681-1400.

About the Historic Springdale Mausoleum

Sitting atop a knoll in the northeast corner of the cemetery, the Springdale Mausoleum is the cemetery’s crown jewel. The building was designed by Lovell & Lovell of Chicago and constructed at a cost of $250,000. It opened in 1929 boasting a number of unique features:

  • Barre granite exterior, the only one of its kind at the time of construction
  • Pink, polished Tennessee marble floors
  • Doors and windows cased with solid, wrought bronze
  • Bronze entrance door framed with a Tudor arch and flanked by pilasters
  • Bronze light fixtures throughout

With its pointed arch entrance, tracery, finials and clover-shaped foils, the Springdale Mausoleum represents an excellent example of Late Gothic Revival architecture, prevalent during the late 1800s through the 1910s. Two expansions were completed in 1965 and 1973.

Green Burials

Today, many people are selecting green burials for themselves or loved ones. We’re in the process of developing a designated area and specific policies to accommodate those who prefer an ecologically friendly solution to burial. Please check back here for updates or call our office at (309) 681-1400.

Ceremonies

We suggest you make arrangements with your funeral director or faith provider to plan a ceremony for the interment of your loved one.

Funeral directors typically arrange for a tent and chairs as well as for the outer burial container (vault). However, in the case of cremated remains where a vault is not required, our staff can provide a small table with greens and/or chairs at the gravesite if requested. We can also provide a tent for a minimal fee.

Pre-Arrangement & Financing

Our staff is here to take your hand and guide you through the many options before the emotion of loss and grief may cloud your thinking. Please allow us to help you and your family while you’re not under the stress of losing a loved one.

Pre-Arrangement

Pre-arranging services eliminates speculation and ensures your wishes are followed. Equally important, you’re guaranteed today’s prices. Our Family Record Guide offers your family a single location in which to record important personal information. To discuss options (including your rights as a funeral consumer), take a personal tour of the cemetery or get answers to other questions you may have, please call our office at (309) 681-1400.

Financing

Prior to the need for burial services, families may either pay in full or finance and pay over 12 months at 0% interest for the purchase of interment rights, markers, and opening and closing services. By relieving your family of a financial burden at the time of your death, you prevent additional stress at a difficult time. Funding your plans in advance also provides protection against inflation — at the time of your death, your loved ones do not have to pay more for the items you selected. Our staff will work with you to develop a funding plan that meets your budgetary needs.

Springdale accepts payment by money order, personal check, cashier’s check, credit card (Visa, Master Card or Discover Card) or automatic withdrawal.

Springdale Cemetery is currently offering a 20% discount to Peoria residents on pre-need sales of gravesites. This is a limited-time offer. Call us today for gravesite options and additional information.
