Generosity and Creativity Bring New Statue of Christ to Life

Thanks to a generous donation from a Peoria businessman and the creative talents of a Peoria company, a new figure of Christ now graces the Resurrection section of Springdale Cemetery.

In mid-December of 2018, members of the Springdale Historic Preservation Foundation and the Springdale Cemetery Management Authority boards gathered at Heritage Restoration & Design Studio for a special unveiling of the statue, which was carved from Turkish marble by European artists.

Bill Winkler, owner and president of Peoria Charter Coach, funded the creation of the new sculpture through a donation to the Springdale Historic Preservation Foundation. It was installed during a commemorative ceremony on April 7, 2019, replacing an existing statue that was cracked and damaged.

Heritage Restoration, which has completed other projects at the cemetery, is a family business founded in 1820 in Bavaria, Germany, and now in its sixth generation. Specializing in restoration and design work for historic churches, homes, courthouses and other buildings — including statuary, carvings, castings, staircases, paintings and more — the company has more than 800 clients across the United States.
